Favourite areas of Epping Forest

Hi all, I’m new round these parts and have been riding in Epping since just before Christmas. I’ve explored quite a few parts of the forest but am keen to find any recommended areas for good singletrack. I’ve stumbled over a few good bits of singletrack in different parts, but I’m really struggling to get a decent flow between areas. It sounds from the descriptions on here that your rides would be ideal. I’m currently in the process of building my fitness up a little more over the next few weeks and then I will be biting the bullet and joining you for a ride if that’s ok? In the meantime any info on goods bits of the forest would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Rob

Welcome to the Forum!

There's quite a good lot if singletrack in this bit which calls itself Walthamstow Forest. We come through the subway in the bottom right corner from the roundabout with the Nth Circ.

You have to ride up a steep muddy (of course) climb to get into the forest.
Turn left onto the main track and then right onto the bridleway. Almost immediately take a singletrack left (a bit of exploring to do around here). If you mostly take rights at any forks you'll come back out onto the bridleway again. Turn left onto it and take any further lefts onto singletrack that you see.

Another good place to have a look around is at the top of Pole Hill. Ride up alongside Chingford Golf course, as you go up the hill stay with the track that goes straight ahead (the main track goes right). When you get to the top, you'll be at the bomb-holes. If you exit this clearing on the far right, work your way left looking for singletrack sections. When you hit the bridleway about halfway doen the hill, there are more sections of singletrack to be found on the downhill side of the bridleway.

Its really quite difficult describing the bits of the forest/giving directions as you end up with instructions like 'left at the tree' - useful huh?

You are very welcome to join in as soon as you like. My advice is the sooner you start, the better!

Hi Emily
Thanks for the swift reply. I actually went from the Waterworks Roundabout on Saturday after reading one of your other posts on the message board. It was a good ride up to Butlers Retreat with some nice singletrack and a couple of good stream crossings. I’d previously caught the train to Chingford as I didn’t realise the Walthamstow part of the forest was so close to Finsbury Park. It’s nice to be able to not have to bother with the train now. I normally pass by the right of Chingford golf course and carry on up to High Beach. Next time I go out I will definitely have to check out Pole Hill. Thanks for the info, I’ll post again when I’ve brushed up my fitness a little more, I expect it will be around the start of March.
Cheers
