New member!Well, I just just browsing some other forums when I came across your site, and I have to say I am glad I found you. I started out mountain biking in the summer, when I got a Mongoose Tyax Elite for my birthday. Won't be able to join you on any of your rides, partly because the furthest I've cycled in one go is Wanstead Flats to Woodford and back, and partly because I'm only 15. But still, I hope to be sticking around this site just to pick up a few new trail ideas. Now once I can get my brakes to stop rubbing against each other, I'll be off again...

Get your bike off to your local bike shop and get those brakes sorted. Its not a major job and shouldn't really cost anymore than £10 depending on where you go.

Or look online (BikeRadar/BikeMagic/etc) for advice and pictures and do it yourself?
I assume that they are V-brakes on your bike? Even if they are cable discs you should be able to fix them with a few basic tools (ask your Dad!) and a bit of time playing with them, once you have the instructions off the web! Or even get a manual (Christmas is not too far.. )
There is very little with these that you can really do any damage to, the worst that can really happen is that you have to take it to the shop to be adjusted....
Once you've done it once or twice, it'll be second nature with the multiple bonuses of being able to:
a) do it yourself in an emergency out on the trail
b) save a fortune by never having to pay the workshop to do it
c) have the satisfaction and pride to know that you did it yourself
d) be able to get it fixed straight away without missing out on riding while you wait for the shop to fit you in
e) if you start young, it might even pan out into a career option (just ask Lukeee!)!
I started when the cost of putting bikes in for repairs became more than the cost of even the specialist tools (80% of the time) and have now built numerous bikes for family, friends and myself as well as over 90% of my repairs/servicing, etc.
It's very rewarding!

Thanks for the replies everyone. The problem isn't quite as bad as I first thought, it doesn't run out of momentum too quickly, so I can easily still cycle on it. If I can ever be bothered I will have a quick fiddle with it, but it isn't bad enough to take it to a shop.
