Meet Alaric & Emily about 9.00 am in hotel along with my girlfriend we all have a leisurely breakfast, discuss the plans for the day, bearing in mind its Sunday and the forecast is very hot 40.C+ agree a ride to the beach is in order, make the mistake of persuading girlfriend to join in on the ride.
Once again Alaric has loaded bikes into the car for the drive to Ramos from where we join unmade road to Sesi. The surface of this road is rock, stones and big lumps of loose bits and dry dust. Alaric having left us to drive on to Sesi, we start on what should be about a twelve mile bike ride along the rocky coastline to join him on the beach, this ends 400m into ride when girlfriend can't cope with the downhill sections. much prefering the airconditioned comfort of the 4 x 4 , a phone call and 20 mins later she's sitting beside Alaric waving goodby to me and Emily through the dust they have just kicked up quickly disapearing up the track. Left to ride at our own pace we now can fully enjoy it, most of the ride you are about 100m above the sea to your right, following the cliff path, its hot
with heat being reflected back by all the white marble outcrops, also having to concentrate on your route through the gulleys and larger rocks . Buzz is great and so is the occasional cooling breeze coming of the sea. 90 mins later come to a steep drop down to the beach path .
Find Alaric, and Toyota 4 x 4 parked on what appears to be a 70 degree slope, unfortunatly area is swamped by Athenians who have come out for the day to cool of from the sun with a dip in the sea, I think you could say the weather was scorchio.
Several cold beers, a swim & snack later taken at the one & only beach side shack which seemed able to cope with hundreds of customers, running tabs which helps when you 've not got any small change in your trunks! The owner still found time to come over and welcome us and present us with a complimentry plate of meze, reminds me of the tea hut at High Beach, I think not.
By mid afternoon its to hot for a lot of Greeks who have now left the beach for a seista somewhere cooler, it must have been the heat, but both Emily and me decide to ride all the way back to Nea Makri and the hotel, foregoing even a lift from Ramos. My own girlfriend thinks I,m mad, I think she used the word Malaka. Leave the beach 2.45 pm by bike
arrive back at Hotel by 6pm feeling smug and tired. Well done to Emily totally unfazed. Once again showed that if you ride sensibly, take on plenty of water and our reasonably fit in the first place the heat can be managed. Eavening spent in another tradional restaurant wth good company, a great friend to Epic MtbGreece, Alexis, who just inspires you with his love & knowlege of his own country, all joining in singing along with the bouzooki players, I imagine the wine drank made us all better singers, even Nico joined us from the Hotel making it truly one of those unforgetable days for all the right reasons.
Decide tomorrows ride, Monday will be to Ymittos where are more technical riding is available. more in report from day 4.
