GPS in Epping

Has anyone tried to map out the routes we ride round the forest using GPS???

Cant seem to see anything online about routes other people have used. Was thinking of buying a unit so all these great trails we find can be pieced to together into a selection of linkable usable routes.

in a word (or two) - sort of!! Very Happy

one of the guys i (used) to ride with regularly has mapped out many miles of ST in the areas i/we frequent more often (Loughton side, to the north of HB, and south down to Chingford Plain etc). however, despite his good intentions, he has yet to either map it as an overlay which could be used with an OS map (the fireroads shown on OS are way off track in the forest btw), or supply it in a usable, downloadable format (lazy bugger??).

i'll have a word with him cos he's still not riding til july (bust his collarbone/hip doing a jump last AUGUST!!) so he must surely have some spare time to sort out what he's got!

so infact i've not been very helpful so far! Laughing

I gps'ed the "regular ride" a couple of years ago in an attempt to learn the route.

It was very hard to follow the gps route in the forest unless of course the trail was well defined.

Probably have a copy somewhere in tracklogs format.

I use a basic Garmin Etrex as a glorified CatEye. Gives you time, speed, average, distance etc. etc. and you can download the log to a PC and view it in Google Maps, which is quite cool.

Probably better suited to more open areas such as the N/S Downs way for use as a guide though.

I have got last Sundays ride with Mick and Mick on my GPS (Edge 301).
I can email you a copy if you tell me which format you can read it in (.gps, .hst, .crs)

Cheers for the GPS tonto... as i cant go out tonight as im racing this weekend i thought Id mess about using your route in memory map.. see here

Its a video file of the route.. its the standard Weekend route with a few tweaks on the way back from high beech I notice.. still most of those who have ridden with the guys will recognize it. It does show you the elevation changes... Makes Pole hill look like Kilimanjaro .. lol

The image version is here. its a 5mb file but if ur on broad band that should not be a problem Smile
