Lets hope the weather improves for this weekend, will try the established format Fast & Furious for Saturday, chilled for Sunday. Both rides starting 10.00am South woodford meeting point. Again if the weather is to poor I will not be riding.Looking forward to next wednesday back to Beastway to try and finnish a little less near the back or at least beat Caz.

Hi guys,

I was recommended to you group by someone over on the bike radar forum.

I have been commuting to work for 9 months now and doing the odd 30 mile trek at the weekend (on the road though..) Since I hurt my knee I have been told to cycle a lot by a physio. I don't like road cycling, its polluted and dangerous, and I would like to get into mountain biking. However I want to build up to it slowly!

I was wondering if I would be suitable to join up with you guys for a ride. Over in bike radar someone said you would accept beginners and go on some nice gentle rides. I have a mountain bike (dawes 1.6 xc, I upgraded from my hybrid a couple of weeks ago, Im loving it!).

Cheers!

Jim

Hi Jim,

If you got this far I sugest you join us for a Sunday ride first where we tent to be more relaxed to our approach to riding in the forest and I would ensure you would not be left stranded, rides start at 10.00 am from our start at South Woodford this weekend with only a short road stretch before we hit the forest, you should be back between 2-3 pm we would expect to cover about 25 miles.I assume I'm stating the obvious but cyling helmet, gloves, and eyewear are a must, couldn't spell neccasetty.

Hope to see you this Sunday unless the weather is really crap.

Cheers, Mike.

By eyewear I assume you mean sunglasses right? and ones that aren't going to fall from you face.

Mike,

Once again I’m crying off, I can’t make this weekend.
Hopefully next weekend as the following two I am away.
So at this rate I’m going to end up more furious than fast when I do eventually get out!
Have a good one……..

Nick

Jim,

Sunglasses or something other kind of eye protection, just to stop bugs, mud and stray branches getting into your eyes.

I wear clear lenses, just cause some parts of the forest can seem dark with sunglasses on.

I'll be out sunday! Might start at nine and meet you at the under pass. But I suppose that all depends on whether or not I get out the house early.

I hope everyone had a good ride yesterday, sorry to have missed it again!

Count me in! If I don't get thrown out of the tube again, I should be there before 10:00.

Okay so I did get thrown out of the tube. Sorry I missed you!

Turns out that people coming from the west have to take the district line to Mile End, then cycle to Leyton, then hop on the Central line to South Woodford. How sweet is that?

The extra 15' it took me to get directions to Leyton and actually ride there, forced me to be 10' late for the meeting, so when I reached George Lane there was nobody there.

I then rode to Epping by following street signs (a good 10km to get there), then entered the forest and rode around using major dirtroads (didn't want to get too lost, no compass and all Smile and then hooked up with a company of fire-fighters (!) who had decided to buy bikes and start riding together!

They had 1-2 people who new what they were doing and 1-2 people who certainly hadn't been on a bike for a while. They were very friendly lads and accepted to adopt me temporarily until they reached South Beach where they ended their ride.

I had been in the forest for about 2 hours by then and was getting tired, so I took the long way home (what seemed like more than 10km to Woodford, then Central to Leyton, then bike to Mile End, then District to Baron's Court). All in all 50km, after which I was too tired to even wash the bike...

Well, I hope to see you next week!

Hi Alex

I wonder how many kms it is from your place to the meeting point?
Maybe its easier to cycle the whole way?

Also don't forget the mainline railway Train times etc.

Trains go from Liverpool Street to Wood Street in Walthamstow (and other stations - maybe the other guys can be more helpful).

Have you used the journey planner on www.tfl.gov.uk you can use advanced options to say you want to use your bike on public transport (among other things)

Hey Em, thanks for the information.

Yes, I was aware of the journeyplanner, but I had two excuses to be oblivious to its advice:

1. No internet connection at home for 20 days (thank you BT)
2. When I did try 2-3 times from work, the ^$£! thing wouldn't work (with the extended bike options).

But now it did work, and it took the Oracle behind TFL roughly 3 minutes to come back with the following advice:

1. Take District to Victoria
2. Take Victoria to Walthamstow Central
3. Cycle 4 miles: http://tinyurl.com/4rxcub

Et voila! Only 75 minutes later, should be in George Lane.

I'm unimpressed by the long journey (especially since I'm doing it alone, have to wake up very early etc etc), but I guess it's the only viable option as Richmond Park does not seem to have the degree of wilderness necessary to have anything more than a stroll in the park.

I'd love to be proven wrong though, as it's a 15' ride from my place Smile

According to TFL it would take me 96 minutes to ride from my place to South Woodford. So 3 hours on the bike round-trip. Err... no. :-]

Cheers

Alex

I cycle from Fulham alex and it's not so bad. I know you're about 4 miles more but if you fancy getting to fulham by train you could ride to south woodford with me. Its a gentle hour and a half ride, a nice warm up.

Bit of  astrange route but you could go on overland from Kensington Olympia to Gospel Oak then change here for Leytonstone High Road, takes about an hour.

Leytonstone High Road is a ten minute ride to South Woodford.

On the way home you can get on with bike at South Woodford then just stay on until Holland Park, unlikely to be chucked off once you ahve the bike on with you, you may get shouted at when getting off the other end though.....

I hope you're talking about the Fulham that's between Hammersmith and Chelsea (SW). In this case, it's right next to me (5' ride) so we could try that. Are you riding this Sunday? If so, go ahead and propose a meeting place/time in Fulham. I've got a map Smile
